Wildlife Feeding Control Regulatory Mechanism

William Paterson University Wildlife Feeding Control Policy

To maintain ecological balance and prevent environmental degradation on the William Paterson University campus, feeding wildlife, including waterfowl, squirrels, and feral animals, is prohibited on WPU property, except in designated areas approved by the university’s Environmental Health and Safety Office. Prohibited activities include intentionally placing food, salt, or other attractants to entice wildlife. This policy does not apply to bird feeders maintained for songbirds, provided they do not attract nuisance wildlife. Feeding wildlife can increase organic waste in stormwater systems, degrading water quality. Violations may result in fines up to $150 per occurrence, enforced by WPU Campus Police or Facilities Management, with potential disciplinary action for students or employees. Educational signage will be posted to promote compliance.
