Litter Control Regulatory Mechanism

William Paterson University Litter Control Policy

To ensure a clean, safe, and environmentally responsible campus, it is prohibited to deposit, scatter, or abandon litter on William Paterson University property, including walkways, parking lots, green spaces, and buildings, except in designated waste receptacles. Litter includes paper, plastic, glass, food waste, cigarette butts, and other debris. WPU departments, clubs, and event organizers must provide adequate waste receptacles and ensure proper disposal during activities. This policy supports stormwater management by reducing debris that could enter campus drainage systems. Violations may result in fines up to $200 per occurrence, with potential cleanup costs assessed, enforced by WPU Campus Police or Facilities Management. Students and employees may face additional disciplinary action under university conduct codes.
