At William Paterson University, our nationally accredited teacher preparation programs offer flexible pathways to earning your New Jersey teaching certification — designed to fit your life and career goals. You'll learn from accomplished faculty who are dedicated to helping you become a confident, compassionate, and effective teacher who makes a difference for every student. Gain hands-on experience through classroom internships across New Jersey, or earn your certification while teaching in your own classroom.

High School Diploma and may have some college credits earned

Options at WP:

Education Majors for Teacher Preparation:

  • Early Childhood Education (Preschool – Grade 3)
  • Elementary Education (general subjects grades K-6)
  • Secondary Education (K-12 one subject only)
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Music Education

Minors lead to additional teacher certifications:

  • Teacher of Students with Disabilities (TSD/ Special Education)
  • English as a Second Language (ESL)
  • Bilingual Education

Options at WP:

Consider a pathway that works for you:

Traditional: Teacher preparation program includes courses in the art of teaching, assessing, and reflecting and culminates in several clinical internships where you teach and co-teach within an experienced teacher's classroom and would be supervised and mentored by the university while also taking teacher preparation coursework.

Programs:

Elementary Education Master of Arts in Teaching and certificate

Secondary Education Master of Arts in Teaching and certificate

Alternate Route: Begin a teaching career without a background in teacher preparation. Work as a teacher (earning salary and benefits) in a NJ public school while completing a state-approved 2-year alternate route teacher preparation program.
