Augustus F. Hawkins Centers of Excellence Grant Program (NEED LINK)
With the aim of diversifying the teaching profession, the United States Department of Education’s Augustus F. Hawkins Centers of Excellence Program was established to advance teacher preparation at minority-serving institutions of higher education. The investment of $1.6 million in William Paterson University's College of Education underscores the crucial role of a diverse teaching workforce in addressing student achievement gaps nationwide. William Paterson University, recognized as one of 12 institutions leading this charge, is diversifying New Jersey's teaching workforce and placing well-prepared, diverse teachers in high-needs communities.
William Paterson University is actively recruiting students from underrepresented populations and nurturing them as teacher candidates, providing intensive academic support, personalized pathways to professional certification and licensure, and impactful clinical experiences. Partnerships with high-needs school districts provide students with guidance from in-district mentors-in-residence and opportunities for paid employment through paraprofessional roles. Together, these efforts exemplify the tangible impact of the Hawkins grant, empowering diverse educators and fostering inclusive learning environments, thus ensuring equitable access to quality education for all students.
