General Admissions Requirements

To apply to a William Paterson University graduate program, submit: 

• Completed application 

• $50 non-refundable application fee; Within 1–2 business days after you apply, your portal will display the link to submit $50 application fee online. 

• Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended sent directly to William Paterson University from the home institution. (An official course-by-course evaluation by a NACES-accredited, AICE- endorsed, Education Choices or Atlas Credential Evaluations evaluation service is required for all coursework completed outside of the US.) 

• Proof of bachelor's degree (or master's degree when required)
• Any additional admissions requirements: Requirements vary by program. Please review the specific requirements listed on your program’s page on our website

Please Note:

• Applications are not reviewed until all required documents are received. 

• Programs with application deadlines require a complete application before the deadline. 

• Admission requirements may vary by program. Review program-specific requirements before applying. 

• Applications are valid only for the term selected; a new application is required for a future term if no action is taken. 

Transcript Policy

• Unofficial transcripts (PDF format only) may be used for admission review and registration purposes for most programs. 

• International coursework must include a course-by-course evaluation completed within the past five years. 

• Screenshots, JPEGs, PNGs, and other image files are not accepted. 

• Admission based on unofficial transcripts is conditional upon receipt of final official transcripts. 

• Official transcripts from all institutions attended must be submitted by the second week of the first term to avoid a registration hold.

William Paterson University offers admission to doctoral, master's, certificate, non-degree, post-master's, and visiting non-degree programs. 

Non-Degree Students

Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree and may enroll in: 

• Up to 9 graduate credits (3 courses total), or 

• Up to 30 undergraduate credits (10 courses total) 

Please note that these are the total number of credits allowed through non-degree enrollment, not the number of credits permitted per semester.

After completing 9 graduate credits, students must apply for admission to a degree or certificate program to continue. Some programs restrict non-degree enrollment or require special permission. 

Please note: 

• Non-degree students are not eligible for financial aid or unemployment waivers. 

• Non-degree students must reapply each term. 

• The 9-credit limit does not apply to senior citizens or students completing undergraduate prerequisites for graduate admission. 

• Students interested in the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Professional Program should apply through that program's separate process. 

Post-Master's Students

Students who already hold a master's degree may complete up to 30 credits in courses open to non-matriculated students. Post-master's or non-degree status does not guarantee admission to a degree or certificate program. 

Degree and Certificate Students

Students admitted to a degree or certificate program are considered matriculated students and may enroll: 

• Full-time: 9-15 graduate credits per semester 

• Part-time: Up to 8 graduate credits per semester
