What Trainings Do I Need?

The trainings you and your research team need to complete is dependent on the requirements of the grant, the roles of each member, and the activities they engage in (such as collaboration with researchers outside the U.S). The Office of Sponsored Programs is happy to answer any questions you have on what trainings are required. Feel free to reach out to us at grants@wpunj.edu.

You can also find this information on the sponsor's website or the grant announcement.

Why Do I Need Compliance Training?

All individuals serving as key personnel on sponsored projects are required to maintain current compliance certification training.  To remain eligible to participate as key personnel on ongoing and future sponsored programs, please ensure that your training is up to date.

CITI Courses Offered at WP

  • Training Courses Offered on CITI
  • Here is a list of the compliance trainings available to researchers at William Paterson University through CITI.

COURSE TITLE DURATION DESCRIPTION IMPORTANT NOTES
Conflict of Interest - Public Health Service - Basic 5 Modules The COI Basic course discusses the PHS regulations on financial conflicts of interest and an investigator’s responsibilities relating to the disclosure of “Significant Financial Interests.” It is designed to help learners satisfy training requirements associated with the PHS regulations on financial conflicts of interest.
    Research Security Training (Combined)

    1 Hour

    (1 Module)

Condensed version of NSF training. The Research Security courses provide the knowledge and tools necessary to protect against risks to the global research ecosystem and undue foreign influence. NSF, NIH, DOE, DOW, and USDA all recognize completion of the condensed module as compliant with their respective RST requirements
Export Compliance (EC) Basic 11 Modules

EC Basic includes an introduction to export compliance, as well as information focused on export compliance as it relates to biosafety, operational departments, international shipping, purchasing, international and foreign waters, collaborations and U.S. sanctions programs, distance education, and technology.

It is designed for use by investigators, members of the research team, key personnel across operational departments, and others who work with or may be responsible for federally controlled devices, materials, or technologies.
Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Basic 12 Modules This course provides an in-depth review of the core RCR topics by discipline (Physical Science, Biomedical, Engineers, etc...) including authorship, collaborative research, conflicts of interest, human subjects, and research misconduct.  The National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) require certain categories of researchers to receive RCR training. However, RCR is increasingly viewed as an essential component of training, regardless of a researcher’s source of funding.
Human Subject Research - (Social-Behavioral-Educational) 13 Modules This SBE-focused comprehensive course provides an expanded training covering not only major topical areas but also many concepts that are specific to types of research, roles in the protection of human subjects, and advanced modules on informed consent topics, vulnerable populations, big data research, mobile apps research, and disaster and conflict research.  It offers historic and current information on regulatory and ethical issues important to the conduct of research involving human subjects. This course has been updated to reflect the 2018 Requirements of the Common Rule.
Human Subject Research - (Biomedical) 15 Modules This biomedical-focused comprehensive course provides an expanded training covering not only major topical areas but also many concepts that are specific to types of research, roles in the protection of human subjects, and advanced modules on informed consent topics, vulnerable populations, stem cell research, phase I research, data and safety monitoring, big data research, mobile apps research, and disaster and conflict research.  It offers historic and current information on regulatory and ethical issues important to the conduct of research involving human subjects.
