NJ Survivor Tuition Benefits Program & Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Scholarship

The Survivor Tuition Benefits Program (STB), established in 1979, benefits the dependent children and surviving spouses of New Jersey firefighters, emergency service workers, or law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty. The scholarship will cover the cost of tuition at any public institution of higher education in New Jersey. Half-time students as well as full-time students are eligible. Applications and additional information is available on the HESAA website. Submit applications and required documentation within the state's deadline. Awards are renewable. 

Eligibility requirements:

  • Be a child or surviving spouse of a NJ firefighter, emergency service worker or law enforcement officer who was killed in the line of duty
  • Students must be citizens, eligible non-citizens, or eligible to file the NJ Alternative Financial Aid Application
  • Be enrolled at least half-time in an undergraduate program at an approved NJ college, university, or degree granting proprietary school
  • Be registered with Selective Service (if required)
  • Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
  • Eligibility is limited to eight (8) years from the date of child's high school graduation and eight years from the date of death for the spouse
  • Must not have received the maximum number of payments

The Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Scholarship (LEOM) is a scholarship that specifically benefits dependent children of New Jersey law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty. The LEOM scholarship covers up to the cost of attendance, less other scholarships, grants, benefits, and other assistance awarded under the HESAA statute. Awards are renewable for up to four (4) years.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Be a dependent child of a NJ law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty
  • Students must be a citizen, eligible non-citizen, or eligible to file the NJ Alternative Financial Aid Application
  • Be enrolled full time in an undergraduate degree program at an approved NJ college, university, or degree-granting proprietary school
  • Be registered with Selective Service (If required)
  • Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
  • Students who have received the maximum number of payments are not eligible
