Political Science

Do these questions interest you?

  • What is the impact of government regulation on business?
  • Is Medicare for All politically feasible?
  • What policies would promote educational equity?
  • Does the mass media control society or does society shape the mass media?
  • What does ‘justice’ mean?
  • What are the causes of war?
  • What did the Supreme Court say about abortion in its recent June Medical Services v. Russo decision?
  • When are police allowed to search your car?

If so, the Political Science major may be right for you.

The Political Science major provides students with the tools and knowledge necessary for effective citizenship in a diverse and global community. In our programs, students learn about the U.S. political and legal system, the politics and cultures of other regions of the world, as well as how to critically evaluate systems of authority and power and their limits. Students will be prepared to live in an interdependent world and will obtain the literacies necessary to succeed in their chosen careers.

Our program features coursework in American politics, comparative politics, international relations, and political theory. Students also get training in how to do research in political science, as well as enhancing their analytic and communications skills. In addition, we offer internships that provide real-world experience in politics.

As the American Political Science Association notes, political science can lead to many different careers in private, for-profit, and non-profit organizations, as well as the public sector, including

• law,
• consulting,
• research,
• business and finance,
• state, local, and federal government,
• elected office and campaign management,
• journalism, media, and communications,
• community service,
• advocacy,
• non-governmental and non-profit organizations, and
• teaching.

An undergraduate political science degree can also lead to a Master’s, a PhD, or a law degree. Some of our graduates have gone into teaching, research, law, union organizing, the non-profit sector, government service, and business. (See some of our graduates here.)
