Overview of English 1100
Attendance Policy The policy of the William Paterson University Writing Program is that students may have no more than three weeks of absences in ENG 1100. In the case of classes that meet twice a week, students may have no more than six absences in a semester. In the case of classes that meet three times a week, students may have no more than nine absences. If you have more absences than this, you will automatically receive an "F." Notes from doctors and coaches will not be accepted, and no distinction will be made between “excused” or “unexcused” absences. Students are strongly advised to save absences in case of an emergency.
Portfolio PolicyThe Program in Writing and Rhetoric is now requiring all ENG 1100 courses to have a portfolio component. For more information about how you can incorporate a portfolio into your courses, please click here to watch a video recording of our portfolio workshop.
Textbook PolicyIt is the policy of the Program in Writing and Rhetoric not to require students to purchase textbooks for English 1100. You may provide readings for students; you may ask them to use online sources; or you may use student writing as the primary texts for the class. Exceptions to this policy can be made. If, after you have reviewed the reading materials linked below, you still have a textbook that you want to teach from, please schedule an appointment to speak with the Writing Program Director.
