Welcome to the Communication Department of William Paterson University Our mission is to provide academically based communication courses aligned to the University's central mission of preparing students for careers, advanced studies, and productive citizenship in an increasingly global economy and technological world. Through our B.A. in Communication and M.A. in Professional Communication, the Communication Department offers an integrated introduction to the communication arts and technologies, including film, video, audio and theatre through a humanizing course of study in concert with introductory and advanced theory and production-oriented classes. Dr. Matthew Crick, Chairperson Departmental curricula address, in the most general sense, the creation, transmission, and evaluation of messages at all levels, for commercial or noncommercial purposes, and prepare individuals to apply the principles of communication to work in varied media. This includes instruction in modes and behavioral aspects of human communication, the formal means by which society organizes communication, and the role of communication in culture. A variety of professional opportunities exists for communication majors. These opportunities include careers in print and broadcasting journalism; radio and television production, including announcing, station management, corporate and cable operations; film production and editing; theatre performance and production; and media theory and criticism. In addition, communication and theatre studies prepare students for positions in business, government, education, public relations, personnel work, management, and consulting.
