William Paterson University Named ‘Military Friendly School’ for 11th Year

For the 11th consecutive year, William Paterson University has earned the status of Military Friendly School from Viqtory, a company that honors institutions that implement the best practices and policies for veterans.

Schools earning the Military Friendly® School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. Over 1,200 schools participated in the 2021-2022 survey with around 750 schools earning the designation

“We are thrilled to receive this recognition for 11 consecutive years. More importantly, we are proud of our veterans, active military and dependents of veterans for their great service and sacrifice,” says Miki Cammarata, vice president for student development at William Paterson University. “They contribute to the diversity of our community and offer a unique and important perspective.”

“Despite the recent challenges raised by COVID-19, William Paterson University’s Office of Veteran and Military Affairs continues to be a focal point for our student veterans,” says Silvia Barrera, coordinator of veteran and military affairs. “We are proud of the resilience of our veteran and military students and by offering them our resources and support, we aim to create a smooth transition from military to college life.”

In addition, help is available when current students are called to active service. “Many of our National Guard students worked in support of the state's response efforts to mitigate the spread and impact of COVID-19,” she says. “Some are still in service, assisting with vaccine distribution. Others were deployed to Washington, D.C. on January 6 to help facilitate the nation’s peaceful transition of power. We ensure that their service does not affect their academic progress.”

William Paterson University’s Office of Veteran and Military Affairs offers information, resources, and a supportive environment for veterans, active-duty service members and dependents of veterans. It also provides assistance with the unique challenges that students face as they transition from military service to college life.

The office also hosts activities on campus such as the 9-11 Remembrance Ceremony, Veterans Day Flag Planting and Remembrance Day, and a Veterans Graduation Recognition Ceremony.

Additionally, William Paterson hosts the only co-ed veteran fraternity in New Jersey, Omega Delta Sigma, and a Student Veteran Organization.
