The goal of this certificate program is to provide students and working professionals in diverse disciplines and professions with a thorough knowledge and understanding of the theory of geographic information systems (GIS) as well as technical training and competency in the application of this technology. GIS is a computer-based technology used to collect, store, organize, analyze, present, map, and visualize all forms of geographically referenced (spatial) data. GIS has become increasingly important as a cost-effective technology in both the private and public sectors within applications in a variety of economic, social, environmental, and political issues such as urban and regional planning, environmental research, resource management, crime analysis, insurance, transportation, emergency management, infrastructure management, marketing, real estate, medical research, public health, geopolitics, social justice, economic planning, and community development.

Some courses taken for this certificate may also count towards some majors/minors and/or the University Core Curriculum.
