Program Description:

This endorsement program is comprised of 12 credits at the 2000, 3000, and 4000 levels: 6 credits in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences and 6 credits in the College of Education. These courses address the following five, state-required content areas:

  • Linguistics
  • Language Acquisition
  • Developing Literacy Skills
  • Methods of Teaching Content in Bilingual Education
  • Theory and Practice of Bilingual Education

This program reflects the importance of field experiences with bilingual students and so is coordinated with existing field work in your Education major. Candidates for this endorsement will have experiences with bilingual students embedded in their practicum placement, student teaching, and other clinical experiences.

Pre-requisites:

Admission to and continuation in P-3, K-5, P-3/K-5 Dual, K-5/5-8 Endorsement, K-5/TSD Endorsement, or K-12 (Mathematics, Social Studies, or Science majors only)

Continuing in the Endorsement Program:

Pass oral and written language proficiency tests (OPI and WPT) in English and the target language. The English OPI must be passed with a score of at least Intermediate High. The English WPT must be passed with a score of at least Advanced Low. The OPI and WPT in the target language must be passed with a score of at least Advanced Low. These requirements must be met before student teaching begins.

Language Proficiency Testing:

Candidates must pass oral and written language proficiency tests (OPI and WPT) in English and in the target language. The English OPI must be passed with a score of at least Intermediate High. The English WPT must be passed with a score of at least Advanced Low. The OPI and WPT in the target language must be passed with a score of at least Advanced Low. These requirements must be met before student teaching begins.

Testing fees are approximately $400 total ($200 per language). Tests are administered by ACTFL. Visit languagetesting.com for more information on test sites and administration.
