INFORMATION FOR
William Paterson University’s Professional Counseling Program offers the Advanced Counseling Certificate to qualified post-master’s students. This program provides students the necessary course work to be eligible for the New Jersey professional counselor license.
Post-master’s students, who already have a master’s degree in counseling or a related area but need additional coursework to meet eligibility requirements for state licensure in professional counseling are eligible for this program. Depending on master’s transcripts, students can take 3 or more credits in required courses until they meet the state requirements to apply for the license. New Jersey requires 60 credits for licensure, of which 48 credits must be in specific domains identified by the state. Students can take courses in the Professional Counseling Program that meet their specific needs until they a) reach 60 credits and/or b) fulfill lacking domain requirements. Credits will be determined by the unfulfilled requirements needed to be eligible for the state license.
Application is accepted on a rolling basis to begin in Fall, Spring, or Summer semester.
