The Department of Communication provides opportunities for degrees at the BA and MA level. The varied programs offer an integrated introduction to the fields of communication studies, media studies, journalism, film, video, audio and radio production, public relations and theatre. Courses of study in media combined with production-oriented classes make graduates productive citizens in an increasingly global and technological economy.

Great communicators are not only great employees, but effective leaders as well. This degree builds awareness of how to communicate information to diverse audiences effectively and confidently, and how to connect with other people in a way that can be persuasive and beneficial to everyone. Good communication skills are essential in just about every industry, so this degree gives an advantage to those who can communicate powerfully both with the written and spoken word. With careers ranging from television producers, radio broadcasters, news journalists, theatre directors and screenwriters, film editors and producers, PR copy writers and marketing specialists, a communication degree prepares students with a huge variety of options and careers.

Mission Statement 

Our mission is to provide an integrated curriculum in communication to prepare students for lifelong learning, productive careers, and responsible citizenship in a global economy and technological world. Through our BA in Communication and MA in Professional Communication we offer systematic courses of study in communication. 

Communication - Student Learning Outcomes

  1.  Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of social, cultural, legal and ethical issues related to their field. 
  2.  Students will demonstrate the ability to effectively research and/or evaluate problems through the use and application of a variety of communication technologies. 
  3.   Students will learn and demonstrate various technical skills in written and/or oral communication, using various technologies, in all communication disciplines. 
  4.  Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to express themselves clearly in oral, written, or visual form 
  5.   Students will be able to demonstrate evaluative, theoretical, analytical and critical thinking skills relevant to their field 
  6.   Students will be able to create a finished product that demonstrates the knowledge and skills acquired in the student’s field of study. This should be accomplished by using methods and techniques common in the field. 

Communication - Goals 

  1.   To develop and enhance student decision making abilities along social, cultural, legal and ethical lines.  
  2.  To teach students techniques, provide learning opportunities and train students to successfully collaborate and/or work independently on projects.  
  3.   To teach students critical thinking skills which will enable them to effectively evaluate sources of information and incorporate those sources into their work.  
  4.   To teach skills that will enable students to express themselves through a variety of communication forms, such as speeches, essays, and visual storytelling.  
  5.  To teach students the skills and techniques necessary to analyze, evaluate, and critique information specific to their area of interest.  
  6.  To teach the knowledge and skills required to produce a finished work in the student's field of interest.
