Cheng Library Expands LEARN Badge Program with Artificial Intelligence Track

The Cheng Library is expanding its LEARN Badge program this semester with a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Track, giving students the opportunity to complete the LEARN Badge by participating in AI-focused workshops across all four tiers of the program. The new track is designed to help students develop practical AI literacy skills, from understanding the fundamentals of AI to evaluating AI tools and learning how to use them more effectively and responsibly.

The Library will be partnering with the Student Government Association Academic Affairs Committee and WP Information Technology to host the Student AI Forum in October. The forum, which provides Tier 1 LEARN Badge credit, will focus on helping students develop a stronger understanding of the language of AI. Through discussion with members of the university community, students will become more familiar with common AI terminology, concepts, and issues shaping the rapidly evolving technology.

The Library Introduction to AI, offered as a Tier 2 program, provides students with a foundation for understanding artificial intelligence. The workshop explores what AI is, how it works, and how AI tools differ from chatbots and traditional search engines. Students also consider important questions surrounding the ethical and appropriate use of AI, including how these technologies can impact learning, research, and decision-making.

At Tier 3, the Library offers Evaluating AI Tools, a hands-on

workshop that gives students an opportunity to assess the strengths and weaknesses of different AI tools. Using an AI evaluation rubric developed by the Library, students test and compare AI tools while considering factors such as credibility, privacy, cost, and functionality. The workshop encourages students to become more critical and informed users rather than simply accepting AI-generated results at face value.

New this semester is the Library's AI: Effective Prompt Writing workshop. Students learn strategies for developing stronger prompts and evaluating the responses they receive from AI tools. By experimenting with different prompting techniques, participants gain practical experience that can help them communicate more effectively with AI and get more useful and relevant results.

Through the new AI Track, the Cheng Library is building on its LEARN Badge program to provide students with opportunities to develop the knowledge and skills needed to navigate an increasingly AI-driven academic, professional, and information environment.
