Jazmine
Name: Jazmine Gutierrez Title: Assistant Director of Community College Enrollment Years at WP: 3.5 Tell us about yourself: My career has been shaped by my journey as a first-generation college student. I grew up in Paterson, New Jersey, in a close-knit, faith-centered family and was active in my church from a young age. I served on the worship team, participated in Christian concerts and recordings, and taught voice and piano. I began my academic path at Bergen Community College in 2013 through the NJ STARS program, earning my Associate of Science before transferring to William Paterson University as an NJ STARS II scholar. I completed a dual degree in Psychology and Popular Music in 2019. I’ve worked across admissions, advising, and student support services, and remain passionate about mentorship and guiding students—especially transfer students—through their academic journeys. Outside of work, I enjoy hiking and exploring nature. Describe your role on campus: In my role at William Paterson University, I support transfer students through the admissions and enrollment process through first-semester advisement, drawing on my background in recruitment, advising, and student services. I work closely with prospective and transfer students—especially those from community colleges—to help them navigate their transition to a four-year institution. My role focuses on providing guidance, answering questions, and ensuring students feel informed and supported as they take the next step toward their academic goals. A defining moment at WP: Transitioning from a part-time role to a full-time position. This shift not only reflected my growth as a professional, but also reinforced my commitment to student support and higher education. It was a meaningful milestone that allowed me to expand my impact, take on greater responsibility, and continue building strong connections with students and colleagues. Favorite part about your job: Working directly with students and being part of their journeys. Whether I’m helping a student navigate the transfer process or providing reassurance during a stressful moment, I value the opportunity to make a positive impact. Seeing students gain confidence and move forward toward their goals is incredibly rewarding. Fun fact: I once climbed the tallest peak in Vermont and helped 15 teenagers do it, too! Finish this sentence: "WP is a powerhouse of opportunities." The University creates pathways for students from diverse backgrounds to grow academically, professionally, and personally. From strong academic programs to dedicated faculty and staff, WP empowers students to achieve their goals while fostering a supportive and tight-knit community.
