Roger McGuinn, Frontman for the Byrds, to Perform at William Paterson University on May 6

Roger McGuinn, leader of the influential 1960s group the Byrds and a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, will perform at William Paterson University in Wayne on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. The show, part of the University’s WP Presents! series, begins at 8 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus.

McGuinn was already a veteran of the New York and Los Angeles music scenes when he co-founded the group that would become the Byrds with Gene Clark and David Crosby in 1964. Prior to forming the Byrds, he toured and performed with the Limeliters, the Chad Mitchell Trio, and Bobby Darin as a guitarist and banjo player.

The Byrds disbanded in 1973 and McGuinn continued to pursue his dream of being a folk singer. He recorded five solo albums on Columbia Records and later oined with Gene Clark and Chris Hillman for three albums on Capitol Records. In 1991 just after the Byrds were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he recorded his acclaimed Back From Rio album with a host of friends, including Tom Petty, Elvis Costello, David Crosby, Chris Hillman, and others.

McGuinn has used the internet to continue the folk music tradition since November 1995 by recording a different folk song each month on his Folk Den website. A selection with guest vocalists was released on CD as Treasures from the Folk Den, which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2002 for Best Traditional Folk Album. In November 2005, McGuinn released a four-CD box set containing 100 of his favorite songs from the Folk Den. He continues to record and release music on his independent label, and says he has no plans to retire.

Tickets are $59, Gold Circle; $49 for orchestra/front loge; and $39 for rear loge/accessible seating. To purchase tickets, or for additional information, call the Shea Center for Performing Arts Box Office at 973-720-2371 or visit wp-presents.org.
