50 Alumni Under 50: Genina D. Carey ‘14

Major: Broadcast Journalism

Current Title: NBC Sports Operation Supervisor, NBCUniversal

Genina Carey launched her broadcast career during her senior year at William Paterson, working in Orlando, Florida on La Voz Kids, the Spanish version of The Voice Kids that aired on Telemundo. Her first job after graduation was at Verizon Fios1 News, where she served as a master control operator, eventually becoming the team's manager in 2017. In her current role at NBCSports, Genina’s assignments include fulfilling and distributing live coverage for prominent events such as the Tour de France, the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, the 2024 Summer Olympics, English Premier League, and all Major League sporting events through NBCSports local sports channels, SportsNet New York, USA Network, GOLF Channel, Amazon Prime Video, and Peacock. In 2015, she created "Fight for Big Bruce" in honor of her late father, Bruce Vincent Carey, to help her family create a handicapped-accessible home for her paraplegic father, who fell and broke his neck eight months after she graduated from WP. Through her openness on social media, "F4BB" became a name of its own, and she continues to raise funds each year for Eric LeGrand's "A Walk to Believe" through the "Big Bruce T-Shirt Campaign" and participate in LeGrand’s "Walk, Run, Roll" to raise funds for spinal cord injury research and the Christopher Reeve Foundation.

Proudest Professional Accomplishment: “Between 2021 and 2023, both of my parents passed away. I know, to some, executing the 2020 and the 2024 Summer Olympics—practically the biggest moments of my company's entire operation—would seem like my biggest professional accomplishment. Nope—it was beginning my entrepreneurial journey by launching Carey Girl Creative in honor of my late mother Cecelia A. Hurd. Her nickname for me was ‘Carey Girl.’ The company's purpose is to help people visually improve brands and concepts through my love for creative design and direction. I've rediscovered my purpose through the establishment of Carey Girl Creative and it's been an extremely healing experience for me. Gold medals are cool and everything, but THAT will always be my biggest professional accomplishment.”

WP Pride. “Being a student leader at WP changed my life. Every time I tend to get in my own way, I think back to 2010 to 2014 Genina. I was fearless. I wanted to do it all and didn't let anything stop me. From being an orientation leader, to the Homecoming chair, to a WPUNJ 88.7FM Brave Radio Host, to hosting The Roundabout on WPTV-6, I felt limitless. Who I am today is a direct reflection of my time at William Paterson University and I make sure I do my best to pay that form of nurturing forward.”
