Dr. Maria Ortiz is a distinguished educational leader whose journey began at the age of five when she arrived in the United States from the Dominican Republic. A proud product of the Newark Public Schools, she continues to inspire and lead through her unwavering dedication to equity and excellence in education there in her role as assistant superintendent of high schools for the school district, which she has served for more than two decades. Currently, she manages an extensive portfolio, supervising 17 high schools and more than 12,500 students, and oversees a budget exceeding $100 million. She has been nationally recognized for presenting the district’s strategic plan on the High Schools Redesign Strategy and its impact on student achievement. Maria previously served as executive director of student life, fostering collaboration across the K-12 spectrum to significantly enhance student outcomes. Her nine-year tenure as principal at Alexander Street School and of The Luis Muñoz Marin School of Social Justice was particularly noteworthy: she made history as the first principal of Dominican descent within the Newark Public Schools. Her global perspective is enriched by her ministerial work, which has taken her to nearly 30 countries, including extensive time in Portsmouth, England, Ghana, and Liberia, West Africa. Maria also leads MJO Ed Consulting, an innovative educational leadership consultancy, and actively participates in Harvard University’s School Leadership series. Her numerous awards include the New Jersey State of Education EOF Leadership Award and the 2024 Newark Municipal Council Community Leader Award, among others.
