Caitlin Monahan '22 Celebrates WP Career of Academic and Athletic Success with Family Full of Pioneers

When Caitlin Monahan walks across the Prudential Center stage at William Paterson University’s Commencement May 18, she will simultaneously follow in someone else’s footsteps and blaze a path for those to come.

That’s because Caitlin ’22 is the daughter of Pioneer women’s basketball head coach Erin (Shaughnessy) Monahan ’91, and the older sister of current WP students Patrick ’24, a sophomore sport management major and men’s basketball student-athlete, and Colleen ’25, a freshman art major.

Caitlin has excelled academically, graduating Summa Cum Laude while earning dual bachelor’s degrees in psychology and early childhood education. She completed the Honors College cognitive science track, and was the recipient of this year’s Department of Psychology Excellence in Academic Achievement Award and the Student Government Association’s Leadership Impact Award. What makes her accomplishments all the more impressive is that she did so while battling through injuries to compete for four seasons at first base, the same position her mother once played for the Pioneer softball team.

“William Paterson has given my family and me opportunities to excel both academically and athletically,” Caitlin said. “I am proud to have played on the same place on the softball field as my mom, as well as have her a part of my college life at her alma mater!”

“We are beyond proud of Caitlin, who persevered through adversity to accomplish her goals,” said Erin, who also was a 1,000-point basketball scorer for the Orange and Black before spending the last 29 seasons as their head coach. “She continually worked hard to achieve the things she wanted most, including student teaching, while playing the game she loves.”

For the Monahan family, William Paterson truly is a family affair and a home away from home.
