Holocaust Survivor Bronia Brandman to Speak to William Paterson Students on November 1

Bronia Brandman, a Holocaust survivor, will share her experiences with WP students during a virtual speaking event organized by the William Paterson University Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies and The Museum of Jewish Heritage on Monday, November 1 at 11:00 a.m via Zoom.

Now a retired public school teacher, Brandman has been featured in major newspapers and an HBO film, recalling her time as a child prisoner in Auschwitz.

Brandman was born into a family of six children in Jaworzno, Poland, and was eight years old when World War II started. After being separated from her brothers and parents at the start of the war, Brandman and her three sisters fled to the nearby town of Sosnowiec, where they remained until being relocated by the Nazis to a ghetto.

In August 1943, the four sisters were deported to the infamous Auschwitz prison camp. After narrowly escaping the gas chambers by running away from her assigned line upon arrival, Brandman remained at Auschwitz until January 1945. She would then survive a forced death march to Germany, after being liberated by the American and Russian armies in May 1945.

Today, Brandman volunteers her time as a member of the Speakers Bureau of the Museum of Jewish Heritage - A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, sharing her remarkable story during their public speaker events.

“This event is one of several that we have brought to William Paterson over the years thanks to our partnership with the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York,” says Alison Dobrik, professor of education and director of the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at the University. “Through the museum's speakers' bureau, Holocaust survivors share their inspiring life stories with schools, museum audiences, and communities. The Center is honored to host Bronia Brandman, who has inspired people all over the world with her testimony."
