Lectures, discussions and creative arts events support William Paterson University’s annual observance of Black History Month during February 2021.
“This month’s programs, led by the Black History Month Planning Committee, the Center for Diversity and Inclusion and the Black Cultural Center, reaffirms the University’s commitment to equity and inclusion,” says David Jones, chief diversity officer and director of talent management at William Paterson University. “The opportunity to come together to celebrate Black excellence provides hope, inspiration, community and a sense of renewal.”
“This year’s theme “Protecting the Crown: Breaking Generational Curses” is intended to engage the community on topics related to liberation, Black identity, family and culture,” explains Yolany Gonell, director of student diversity and inclusion at the Center for Diversity and Inclusion/ Black Cultural Center. “As a community we want to pay tribute, preserve, and honor the history and many contributions made by African Americans and the Black Community, as well as come together for social change to break oppressive systems through student activism and community dialogue.”
