Time Lapse Dance Ensemble’s Ice Cycle Performs at William Paterson University on April 4

William Paterson University will present Time Lapse Dance Ensemble’s Ice Cycle at 12:30 p.m. on April 4, 2019 as part of the Science of Art series. The performance will be held at the Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus in Wayne.

Ice Cycle is an environmentally centered dance expressing the fragility and dynamism of the Arctic icescape using artistry to illustrate climate change. The piece is inspired by choreographer Jody Sperling’s experience dancing on Arctic polar sea ice. Time Lapse Dance Ensemble collaborates with composer Matthew Burtner, a pioneer in eco-acoustics, to include ice-inflected sounds to create stunningly beautiful music.

Sperling was invited by oceanographer Robert Pickart to participate in a 43-day polar science mission as choreographer-in-residence aboard an icebreaker vessel in 2014. While scientists collected data, Sperling danced on the frozen sea as research for Ice Cycle and inspired the Time Lapse Dance Ensemble’s work.

The performances will also include a revival of Time Lapse Dance’s signature climate-themed work Turbulence, which visualizes patterns of air disturbance into kinetic patterns.

Admission for the general public is $5 and free for WP students with ID.
