William Paterson University Percussion Students Participate in the McCormick Marimba Festival in Florida

William Paterson University percussion students attended and performed at the McCormick Marimba Festival at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Fla. from January 26 to 29.

Payton MacDonald, William Paterson University professor of music, is the director of the percussion ensemble. Students who attended and performed were: Joseph Butz, Alex Cichocki, Jon Dabie, Elise McAloon, Brendan Orfan, Anthony Salimbene, and Elizabeth Tieu.

“Attending the McCormick Marimba Festival was a highlight of our year,” MacDonald said. “The Festival was a great opportunity for the percussive arts community at large to see how well our students play." MacDonald continued, “Our students were able to interact with peers from leading institutions in the U.S. and Canada. They experienced classic and new repertoire, broadened their technical understanding of the instrument, and performed in a beautiful space to an attentive audience.”

The McCormick Festival was formed in 2002 to promote the study, performance practice, and interpretation of literature for the marimba and related keyboard percussion instruments. Each year, the McCormick Marimba Festival attracts the finest high school, university and professional performing artists from around the world for a two-day festival.

Other performers included ensembles from the University of Toronto, University of Massachusetts-Amherst, University of Northern Colorado, Florida International University, Stetson University, Michigan State University and New York University.
