William Paterson University will celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Jazz Room series and the 40th anniversary for the Jazz Studies program with a one-time-only concert by the William Paterson Alumni “Super Band,” five alums who will come together for a very special jam session. The performance will take place on Sunday, October 28, 2012, at 4 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus.Prior to the concert, the members of the “Super Band” will be the guests for Sittin’ In, an informal discussion about jazz, at 3 p.m. Shea Center. Tickets are $15 general; $12 senior citizens, William Paterson faculty, staff and alumni; and $8 for non-William Paterson students. William Paterson students may attend free of charge. Admission to Sittin’ In is free to all Jazz Room ticket holders.The “Super Band” is comprised of Fred Hendrix ’99, Anton Denner ’87, Matt King ’86, Doug Weiss ’88 and Joe Farnsworth ’94. Trumpeter Fred Hendrix recorded as the sideman with George Benson, Bradford Hayes, Melvin Davis, and New Jersey City University Jazz Ensemble. Saxophonist Anton Denner is featured on numerous recordings like “Roots Propaganda,” “Awake,” “El Medico de Coqui,” “Ghost Ships” and “Shockwaves.” Pianist Matt King won the Great American Jazz Piano Competition in 2000 and bassist Doug Weiss performs on the New York club scene with regular appearances at Smalls, Smoke, the Kitano, the Blue Note, Birdland and the Village Vanguard. Jazz Drummer Joe Farnsworth has performed on most of the great American and international jazz stages and is featured on more than 70 CDs.Launched in 1978, The Jazz Room is one of the largest and most prestigious college-sponsored jazz events in the country. Performers include renowned professionals, who encompass the complete spectrum of jazz, from practitioners of traditional jazz to avant-garde to bebop to swing to Afro-Latin jazz, as well as William Paterson’s own student ensembles. The series has won numerous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and more than 25 years of continuous support from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for its innovative programming.
