Student Health Insurance Plan Information

In accordance with the state law, William Paterson University is required to offer health insurance coverage for purchase by students who are enrolled full-time each academic year.  The plan being offered for 2023/2024 academic year is through Aetna Student Health. For health insurance purposes, full time is defined as an Undergraduate taking 12 or more credit hours or a Graduate student taking 9 or more credits and Biology/Biotechnology graduate students taking 8 or more credit hours and Doctor of Clinical Psychology students taking 6 or more credits must go through the waive or enroll process.  Full-time students as defined above, are automatically billed for health insurance.  Full-time students have the opportunity to waive/opt out of this coverage by providing evidence of health insurance coverage to the University Sponsored insurance company by the waiver deadlines established by the University.

Spring 2024- Half Year Plan
The Student Health Insurance fee for the Spring 2024 will be automatically billed to all new incoming full-time students and students who were part-time during the Fall 2023 semester and become full-time for the Spring 2024 semester.  Students who waived their annual health insurance plan in the fall may not enroll in the spring semester unless there is a qualifying life event.  A qualifying life event is a change in your situation, like getting married, having a baby, adoption or losing health coverage that allows you to enroll in health insurance within the first 31 days of the event outside the Open Enrollment Period.  To enroll due to a qualifying life event, contact Aetna Student Health at (800) 481-8814.

Health Insurance Enrollment/Waiver Information 
Students are required to enroll/waive the University Sponsored Insurance Plan each academic year.  If you plan to keep the University Sponsored insurance, you may self-enroll prior to the University enrollment period.  If you have other coverage that is comparable to the University Sponsored Insurance and do not wish to supplement your plan with the University's Plan, you must complete the on-line waiver form to have this charge removed from your bill. Disclaimer: If you withdraw from all/some courses on/or after the add/drop period it does not remove the health insurance premium. You will still remain enrolled in the health insurance plan for the duration of the effective date. You will also be financially responsible for the full cost of the health insurance premium unless you have an approved waiver on file by February 24, 2024.

Part-time students
The University Sponsored insurance plan is not available to part-time students.

WPOnline students
Full-time students enrolled exclusively in the WPOnline program are not required to have health insurance offered through WPU.

Important information

Copies of your insurance card submitted to the Office of Student Accounts or any other William Paterson University office does not constitute a waiver and is not acceptable. The University reserves the right to audit all waivers in order to ensure compliance with the University insurance requirements. Please be sure to have a copy of your insurance policy as you may be asked to provide documentation. A valid insurance card must be available when submitting the insurance waiver. Pending insurance coverage or a letter from your employer or third company is NOT acceptable.
