Course Types

The School of Continuing and Professional Education offers multiple types of classes in order for students to pursue their interests and advance their careers. The types of courses offered through our department are: In-Person, Online (Synchronous), Online (Asynchronous), and Hybrid.

In-Person

In-person courses are taught on campus at the scheduled course times so that students can interact with their instructor and classmates in person.  Course learning outcomes are the same as Online (Synchronous), Online (Asynchronous), and Hybrid courses.

Online (Synchronous)

Online (Synchronous) courses are taught using Blackboard (Bb) or Zoom and require students to log in at the scheduled course and times to interact with their instructor and classmates. Professors can require students to take exams online at a specific date and time.  Access to a camera and microphone are required.  Course learning outcomes are the same as In-Person, Online (Asynchronous), and Hybrid courses.

Online (Asynchronous)

Online (Asynchronous), courses are taught using Blackboard (Bb) or an offsite platform such as MindEdge. Students are not required to log in at specific times.  Assignments may have deadlines, but students have the flexibility of studying where and when they want. There is usually little or no interaction with an instructor. Access to a camera and microphone are not typically required. Course learning outcomes are the same as In-Person, Online (Synchronous), and Hybrid courses.

Hybrid

Hybrid courses are taught using a combination of in-person and online activities. They require students to attend on-campus, in-person scheduled classes, but the online portion may be either synchronous or asynchronous.  Access to a camera and microphone are required typically required. Course learning outcomes are the same as In-Person, Online (Synchronous), and Online (Asynchronous).
