Athletic Training - Mission Statement

The mission of the Athletic Training Program at William Paterson University is to promote student success, educational excellence, and lifelong learning. The University’s Athletic Training Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) and provides students with a comprehensive, progressive education. The faculty and staff are committed to provide quality professional education and high academic standards for a diverse student population, while facilitating the integration of didactic and clinical education experiences.

The Athletic Training Program is a rigorous, challenging educational experience, which presents knowledge and skills necessary for the students' professional preparation. Upon completion of the program, the students will be well prepared to take the Board of Certification (BOC) examination. Ultimately, the goal of the Athletic Training Program at William Paterson University is to prepare students for a successful future in the athletic training profession.

Athletic Training - BS Student Learning Outcomes

The Athletic Training Program maintains various objectives, which promote programmatic, curricular, and student outcomes. The program aims to:

  • Provide athletic training students with knowledge and skills to have a productive undergraduate academic career, to pass the Board of Certification exam on the first attempt, and to become competent and successful future certified athletic trainers.
  • Prepare athletic training students to pursue graduate education or employment in the field of in athletic training, allied health, or related fields.   
  • Assist athletic training students with the development of lifelong learning skills. 
  • Develop athletic training students’ written and verbal communication skills.
  • Promote athletic training students’ critical thinking.
  • Endorse athletic training students' use of technology in the classroom and clinical experiences. 
  • Offer athletic training students a variety of clinical experiences whereas the students will gain a professional work ethic and sensitivity to diversity. 
  • Encourage athletic training students to take active roles in the community and athletic training professional organizations.
  • Maintain a positive, working environment among the athletic training students, AT Program faculty and staff, and preceptors.

    Sports Medicine - Mission Statement

    The mission of the Sports Medicine (SMED) major at William Paterson University is to promote student success, educational excellence, and lifelong learning. The  SMED major provides students with a comprehensive, progressive education that prepares students to either apply into a graduate professional program or find gainful employment in the field of sports medicine. The faculty and staff are committed to provide quality professional education and high academic standards for a diverse student population.

     The SMED major is a rigorous, challenging educational experience, which presents knowledge and skills necessary for the students' preparation to apply to a graduate professional program or employment in the field upon completion of this program. Ultimately, the goal of the SMED major at William Paterson University is to prepare students for a successful future in the sports medicine profession..

    Sports Medicine - Student Learning Objectives & Outcomes

    The goal of the program is to help students understand the sport business management principles and prepare them to hold entry-level positions. The program aims to:

    • Provide sports medicine students with knowledge and skills to have a productive undergraduate academic career, to apply to a graduate professional program, in athletic training, allied health, or a related field, or obtain gainful employment in the field of sports medicine.
    • Assist sports medicine students with the development of lifelong learning skills.  
    • Develop sports medicine students’ written and verbal communication skills.
    • Promote sports medicine students’ critical thinking.
    • Endorse sports medicine students' use of technology in the classroom.
    • Encourage sports medicine students to take active roles in the community and sports medicine professional organizations.
    • Maintain a positive, working environment among the sports medicine students and SMED Program faculty.


    Sport Management- Mission Statement

    The mission of the Sport Management Program at William Paterson University is to help students discover their unique strengths and educate them on how to use their abilities to make an impact in the sport business world.  The sport management program is designed for students with a passion for the world of sports and offers a rigorous curriculum for understanding management principles required of professionals in the field.  The program gives students the business and administrative skills needed by organizations involved with sports activities, products, and services.  The goal of the program is to help students understand the sport business management principles and prepare them to hold entry-level positions.

    Sport Management - BS Student Learning Outcomes

    1. Students will be able to understand the sport business industry nationally and internationally through classroom learning and experiential learning.
    2. Based on student learning from the sophomore, junior  and senior classes, students will be able to write about numerous sport management topics and be able to understand and discuss current issues.
    3.  Based on student learning from the sophomore, junior  and senior classes, students will be able to link classroom theory to real-world experiences.

    Sport Management - BS Goals

    The goal of the program is to help students understand the sport business management principles and prepare them to hold entry-level positions.

    The program aims to:

    • Identify the skills and duties essential to successful performance in a wide range of sport related positions
    • Identify, analyze and determine ethical and legal issues in sport  
    • Develop and demonstrate critical thinking skills
    • Demonstrate information literacy and effective oral and written communication skills 
    • Conceive, plan, execute, and evaluate a sports event 
    • Acquire business leadership skills
    • Demonstrate knowledge of diverse cultures, including global and historical perspectives
    • Identify activities that fulfill personal, civic, and social responsibilities
    • Obtain a further in-depth knowledge of sport management and research


    Exercise Science - Mission Statement

    The mission of the Exercise Science Program at William Paterson University is to provide extraordinary learning opportunities and to foster professional growth through hands-on learning, clinical observations, internships, and faculty-lead research related to human physiology and movement.  The program incorporates practical applications, integrated with clinical research.  The goal of the program is to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles to a wide variety of populations.  We are committed to empowering students to pursue careers, graduate education and/or certifications in fitness/wellness, sport performance, clinical professions, and research.

    BS Exercise Science: EP Student Learning Outcomes

    1. Students will identify the various professions included in the field of exercise science.
    2. Students will identify appropriate members of roles within the health care/fitness team.
    3. Students will conduct and interpret cardiorespiratory fitness assessments on healthy and clinical populations.
    4. Students will recognize major signs and symptoms and risk factors for cardiovascular, pulmonary, and metabolic diseases.
    5. Students will demonstrate proper fitness sequencing and identification of proper assessment protocols based off of participant risk factors and medical history.
    6. Students will demonstrate knowledge of strength, aerobic, and flexibility-based exercise.
    7. Students will be able to identify physiologic changes in acute exercise and adaptations in chronic exercise.
    8. Students will be able to implement cardiorespiratory and resistance training prescriptions and progressions using the FITT principle in healthy and clinical populations.
    9. Students will demonstrate individual and group fitness leadership techniques for working with participants of various ages and abilities/disabilities.
    10. Students will be able to identify behavioral and lifestyle strategies to enhance overall health and exercise adherence.
    11. Learn how to design and implement safe and effective strength training and conditioning and personal training programs. 

    BS Exercise Science: EP Goals

    1. understand the exercise science field:  Students will understand the exercise science field, including its origins, current practice, and future directions.
    2. assessment protocols and pre-participation screening procedures:  Student will implement assessment protocols and pre-participation screening procedures to maximize safety and minimize risk in healthy and clinical populations.
    3. exercise prescription and implementation:  Students will be provided with knowledge on exercise prescription and implementation in healthy and clinical populations.
    4. optimize adoption and adherence to exercise programs:  Students will be instructed on how to optimize adoption and adherence to exercise programs and other healthy behaviors.
    5. create and disseminate action and injury prevention plans:  Students will be provided instruction on how to create and disseminate action and injury prevention plans.


    Exercise & Sport Studies  - Mission Statement 

    The mission of the program is to offer students the opportunity to advance their professional and academic careers through offerings in our Exercise Physiology, and Sport Administration programs. The disciplines within the domains of exercise science include biomechanics, exercise physiology, motor behavior, and sport nutrition. Sport administration includes focus areas such as administration and finance, facility operations, event planning and management, recreational sport management, youth sport development and management, and more. 

    The diversity and professionalism of the faculty within the Department of Kinesiology presents a tremendous opportunity to initiate graduate training in the field of Exercise and Sport Studies and the capability to offer a comprehensive master’s program.

    Exercise & Sport Studies - MS Goals

    1. Provide extensive training and knowledge in exercise physiology for students with undergraduate degrees in exercise science or related discipline;
    2. Provide extensive training and knowledge in sport administration for students with undergraduate degrees from a variety of disciplines;
    3. Provide an opportunity for students to acquire research skills; 
    4. Provide further professional training in exercise science.
