Political Research Associates

Political Research Associates works to facilitate public understanding of the threat posed to human rights by oppressive and authoritarian right-wing movements in the United States. Founded in 1981, we are the premier national organization studying the full spectrum of the US Political Right - from ultraconservatives in the electoral arena to paramilitary organizations to supremacist groups. Through our research and publications, and as a national resource and support center for activists, journalists and others, PRA helps to build the movement for progressive social change and promotes democratic values and principles.

Brookings Institution

The Brookings Institution, one of Washington's oldest think tanks, is an independent, nonpartisan organization devoted to research, analysis, and public education with an emphasis on economics, foreign policy, governance, and metropolitan policy.

American Foreign Policy Council

For two decades, the American Foreign Policy Council (AFPC) has played an essential role in the U.S. foreign policy debate. Founded in 1982, AFPC is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing information to those who make or influence the foreign policy of the United States and to assisting world leaders, particularly in the former USSR, with building democracies and market economies. AFPC is widely recognized as a source of timely, insightful analysis on issues of foreign policy, and works closely with members of Congress, the Executive Branch and the policymaking community. It is staffed by noted specialists in foreign and defense policy, and serves as a valuable resource to officials in the highest levels of government.

Unpaid internship positions are usually available year round. Hours are flexible with interns expected to work a minimum of 20 hours per week. Candidates should have a strong interest in foreign policy and national security. Knowledge of Russian and/or Mandarin is helpful.

National Academy of Social Insurance

The National Academy of Social Insurance is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization made up of the nation's leading experts on social insurance. Its mission is to promote understanding and informed policymaking on social insurance and related programs through research, public education, training, and the open exchange of ideas.

The National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI) seeks outstanding graduate and upper division undergraduate students to serve as interns on social policy research and policy analysis projects in Washington, D.C. Students studying economics, gerontology, journalism, political science, public policy, social work, actuarial science or related subjects are urged to apply for this 12-week summer semester internship.

Urban Institute

The Urban Institute is a nonprofit nonpartisan policy research and educational organization established to examine the social, economic, and governance problems facing the nation. It provides information and analysis to public and private decision makers to help them address these challenges and strives to raise citizen understanding of the issues and tradeoffs in policy making.

Although the Urban Institute does not have a formal internship program, we do hire Research Assistants on a temporary basis for full-time and part-time assignments during the academic year and during the summer.

The position of a temporary Research Assistant is responsible for assisting senior researchers in various policy areas such as housing, welfare, population studies, health, and education policy. Incumbents will conduct literature reviews, analyses and programming tasks, as well as participate in reporting research findings and presenting data.

Center for Economic and Policy Research

The Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) [based in Washington D.C.] was established to promote democratic debate on the most important economic and social issues that affect people's lives. In order for citizens to effectively exercise their voices in a democracy, it is necessary that they be informed about the problems and choices that they face. CEPR is committed to presenting issues in an accurate and understandable manner, so that the public is better prepared to choose among the various policy options.

Institute for Women's Policy Research

The Institute for Women's Policy Research (IWPR) is a non-profit, scientific research organization that works primarily on issues related to equal opportunity and economic and social justice for women. IWPR works with policymakers, scholars, and advocacy groups around the country to conduct research, disseminate its findings, and build a network of individuals and organizations concerned with policy issues for women.

Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR)

"FAIR has openings each semester for volunteer student interns interested in media research, publicity, magazine and radio production. Interns have opportunities to develop writing, research and public relations skills, and to acquire broad knowledge of both corporate and independent media. Students with an educational background in the social sciences, particularly political science, will benefit greatly from an internship with FAIR. Other students well suited to this work come from public administration and journalism programs."

The Nation Institute

For over two decades, The Nation Institute, in conjunction with The Nation magazine, has provided a practical and comprehensive intern program for college students and recent graduates interested in magazine journalism and publishing.

The Nation Institute is a nonprofit foundation that supports research, conferences, seminars, educational programs and independent media with an emphasis on social justice, civil liberties and cultural politics. The Nation, America's oldest weekly magazine, is a journal of politics and the arts that focuses primarily on foreign and domestic policy, civil liberties and literature.

The internships are full time, 10:00am to 6:00pm, five days a week, and there are eight intern positions during each session (seven in New York and one in Washington).

South End Press

South End Press is a nonprofit, collectively run book publisher with more than 250 titles in print. Since our founding in 1977, we have tried to meet the needs of readers who are exploring, or are already committed to, the politics of radical social change. Our goal is to publish books that encourage critical thinking and constructive action on the key political, cultural, social, economic, and ecological issues shaping life in the United States and in the world. We hope to provide a forum for a wide variety of democratic social movements, and provide an alternative to the products of corporate publishing.

South End Press accepts applications from prospective interns and volunteers on a rolling basis. We generally ask for a three-month minimum commitment, and expect interns and volunteers to work 16-24 hrs per week. Interns and volunteers are unpaid

Democracy Now! is a national, daily, independent, award-winning news program airing on over 350 stations in North America. This internship programme is for the United Nations Secretariat New York only. Other UN Offices, Funds and Programmes such as the United Nations Development Programme UNDP, United Nations Children's Fund UNICEF, International Labour Organization (ILO), and United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), have separate internship arrangements. Students interested in interning at organizations or offices other than the UN Headquarters Secretariat in New York should directly contact the respective offices for further information.

Human Rights

Amnesty International

Amnesty International (AI) is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights. AI is independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion. It does not support or oppose any government or political system, nor does it support or oppose the views of the victims whose rights it seeks to protect. It is concerned solely with the impartial protection of human rights. Interns are recruited for International Secretariat (IS) offices in London, Geneva and New York. We recruit interns for 6 month periods to carry out administrative and project related work.

Human Rights Watch investigates and seeks to promote human rights worldwide. Founded in 1978, Human Rights Watch has come to be known for its impartial and reliable human rights reporting, its innovative and high-profile advocacy campaigns, and its success in affecting the human rights-related policies of the U.S. and other influential governments.

Human Rights Watch offers academic internships for both undergraduate and graduate students in our New York, London, Los Angeles, and Washington offices in most of its Regional and Thematic divisions, its Special Initiative programs, and its Organizational Support departments.

Global Exchange

Global Exchange is a membership-based international human rights organization dedicated to promoting social, economic and environmental justice around the world. Since our founding in 1988, we have successfully increased public awareness of root causes of injustice while building international partnerships and mobilizing for change.

Applications are accepted and reviewed during the fall on a rolling basis. Internships will typically start in September and last through until December - however this may vary according to the internship you apply for. If you see an internship posted, it is open! Global Exchange operates a structured internship program during the summers. Interns work closely with program staff on campaigns and programs and are expected to bring some knowledge and experience to the organization. Interns should be able to offer 20-40 hours per week from June-August.

Witness for Peace

Witness for Peace (WFP) is a grassroots, politically independent, non-profit, human rights and economic justice organization dedicated to the principals of non-violence. Our mission is to change those United States foreign and economic policies which contribute to poverty and oppression in Latin America and the Caribbean, and to promote just alternatives.

Internships start as unpaid positions. Candidates will be involved in many aspects of WFP's operations, such as tracking legislation, writing analyses for action alerts and newsletters, communicating with representatives of collegial organizations and Congressional offices, and representing WFP in coalition meetings. The time commitment ranges between 20 to 30 hours weekly.

Environmental Careers Organization

The Environmental Careers Organization (ECO) is the country's leading environmental careers development organization. ECO's mission is to protect and enhance the environment through the development of diverse leaders, the promotion of careers, and the inspiration of individual action. ECO accomplishes this through internships, career advice, publications and research. Every year, ECO places more than 750 students in paid internships, at 98 organizations, in 35 states and 3 US territories. The majority of our internships begin in the summer, though internships are available throughout the year. Application deadlines are typically within 3 weeks of posting. Our internship listing is constantly being updated, so check back often.

Resources for the Future (RFF)

RFF is a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization that conducts independent research -- rooted primarily in economics and other social sciences -- on environmental, energy, and natural resource issues. Although RFF is headquartered in Washington, D.C., its research scope comprises programs in nations around the world.

RFF has several paid summer internships for outstanding undergraduate and graduate students. Priority consideration is given to graduate students. The program is open to both U.S. and non-U.S. citizens. However, the latter must be enrolled at a U.S. university and have proper work and residency documentation. Internships are available beginning in June and ending in late August for a 10-week assignment. To meet individual needs, some flexibility in the beginning and ending dates is possible. Students earn a stipend ($375 per week for graduate students; $350 per week for undergraduates). Housing assistance is not provided. Each intern can expect to work with one or more RFF researchers on a variety of ongoing projects or assist in the development of entirely new areas of research and policy analysis. RFF's three research divisions are Energy and Natural Resources (ENR), Quality of the Environment (QE), and Risk, Resource, and Environmental Management (RREM). All three divisions seek highly motivated candidates in the social and natural sciences. For positions in ENR and QE, applicants should be trained in economics and quantitative methods. RREM is particularly interested in candidates with a strong interest in public policy. Candidates for all divisions should have outstanding policy analysis, strong writing skills, and an interest in complex environmental policy problems amenable to interdisciplinary analysis. The ability to work without supervision in a careful and conscientious manner is essential. A list of anticipated research projects for summer 2006 will be posted on this page by mid-January. Students are urged to consult this listing before applying to determine if they have a suitable background for those areas.

No application form is required. Students applying for the 2006 internship program should send an application package with: (1) a cover letter describing their areas of interest, (2) a resume, and (3) a recent transcript. Applicants to RREM also should include a brief writing sample (3-5 pages of a recent paper). The cover letter should be as specific as possible regarding research topics of interest. In addition, please provide name, address, phone, and email information for two references. Inter-American Dialogue

The Inter-American Dialogue offers full and part-time volunteer internships in the fall, spring and summer semesters for students interested in the dynamics of inter-American relations. The Dialogue is a forum for sustained exchange among leaders of the Western Hemisphere and an independent, nonpartisan center for policy analysis on economic and political relations in the Americas. It regularly convenes U.S. and Latin American leaders from the public and private sectors and diverse political perspectives to search for cooperative responses to hemispheric problems. Covering a wide scope of issues, it is engaged in an ambitious effort to improve the quality of debate and decision making on U.S.-Latin American relations and to promote new opportunities for hemispheric political, social, and economic cooperation.

Diversity Internship Program for Afro-Descendants and Indigenous Peoples

The Inter-American Development Bank is an international financial institution that was created in 1959 to help accelerate the economic and social development of its member countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Bank, whose headquarters is in Washington, D.C., is today the principal source of external public financing for many countries of the Latin American and Caribbean Region. The Bank is owned by its 46 member countries.

The Bank, as an international organization, is committed to the principle of equal opportunity for all persons based solely on their individual merits. Each year the Inter-American Development Bank hires graduates and undergraduate students for a period of two to three months. During their employment, the students are placed in one of the Bank's Departments or Units.

To be eligible for the IDB Diversity Internship Program, the candidate must be: Enrolled in an undergraduate or higher university program, and returning to his/her studies the following semester. African descendant and/or member of Indigenous Peoples in one of the Bank's member countries; must provide a written statement that attests to this identity. A citizen of one of the Bank's 46 member countries. Proficient in at least one (1) of the four (4) official languages of the Bank (English, Spanish, Portuguese and French), preferably with a working knowledge of a second language. Has not reached the age of 31 years of age as of June 1 for undergraduate students and has not reached the age of 36 years of age as of June 1 for graduate students, of the year he/she wishes to participate.

CIEE is the leading U.S. non-governmental international education organization. CIEE creates and administers programs that allow high school and university students and educators to study, volunteer, work and teach abroad. Among many activities, CIEE administers 60 study abroad programs in over 30 host countries, 800 volunteer projects in 30 host countries, work programs in Australia, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand and teaching programs in China and Thailand. Educators can participate in January and summer seminars in 20 countries.
