Beyond Apps: What Our Students Really Need to Know about Technology:

On Wednesday, November 29, Gamin Bartle, Director of Instruction Research & Technology, gave a presentation entitled "Beyond Apps: What Our Students Really Need to Know about Technology." The event was sponsored by the WPU Center for Teaching Excellence and the IRT Center for Teaching and Learning with Technology.

Dr. Bartle offered a definition of Digital Literacy based not on specific skills, but on problem-solving and the ability to keep current as technology changes. Rather than focusing on skill-based technology training (i.e. learning to use Excel), which was standard 15-20 years ago, she believes we should turn our attention to equipping students with the skills to solve problems using technology in creative ways, and to instilling in them an interest in self-directed learning so they can adapt to new technologies more readily. Attendees engaged in a thoughtful and interesting discussion of the issues around digital literacy and William Paterson University Students.
