Public Service Loan Forgiveness

William Paterson University is a qualifying employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. The PSLF program allows for the forgiveness of the remaining balance due on a loan under the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) Program after the borrower makes 120 qualifying payments, under a qualifying repayment plan, while employed full-time by a qualifying employer.

Usually non-defaulted Direct Loans are eligible for loan forgiveness including but not limited to the following:

  • Direct Subsidized Loans
  • Direct Unsubsidized Loans
  • Direct PLUS Loans
  • Direct Consolidation Loans

Other federal student loan programs may become eligible for PSLF if they are consolidated into a Direct Consolidation Loan, however, only payments made on the Direct Consolidation Loan will count toward the required 120 qualifying payments.

An eligible borrower must:

  • Not be in default on the loans for which they are requesting forgiveness
  • Be employed full-time by a qualifying employer when making each of the required 120 qualifying loan payments, at the time of application for loan forgiveness and during the time of the remaining balance on eligible loans*

University employment verification process for PSLF borrowers:

  • Eligible PSLF borrowers must utilize the University’s employment verification vendor for completion of the employer’s information on the Employment Certification for Public Service Loan Form.
  • Employment Verification
  • The employee can then submit the document to the loan servicer for the PSLF program.
