Supervision Discussion Handout Sample - written by Debbie Anaya and Michael Sheridan

Paperwork: At my first visit, I will need a class schedule, school calendar, and your emergency contact information.

Required Text: William Paterson University College of Education Clinical Experience Handbook. It is imperative that you are very familiar with all components of the handbook. Be sure to review the requirements for professional dress code, professional conduct, punctuality, and attendance.

Observations: I will be observing a lesson at least _____  times during the semester. We will develop a schedule of observations at our first meeting. As per the handbook, you are required to use the WPU Lesson Plan format.  Your lesson plans should be thorough and include high cognitive demand, as well as specifics regarding differentiation of your students, and all handouts (as attachments). Please be sure to proofread carefully for grammar, syntax and mechanics and email your lesson to me at least 48 hours in advance of your observation to allow time for questions, recommendations, and revisions if needed. After the observation, we will have a post-observation conference, which will be interactive. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the Observation Report Form and the Descriptors of Observational Competencies. Please be prepared with a notebook to document our discussion for recommendations, suggestions, etc.  It is expected that a variety of content areas be taught for your observations. At least one lesson should incorporate the use of technology, cooperative learning and creative arts. All reports will be filed through Chalk and Wire.

Co-Teaching: William Paterson University requires a co-teaching instructional delivery model in which teachers share the responsibility for a group of students and provide instruction that includes co-planning, co-delivery, and co-evaluation of instruction for the first 4 to 5 weeks.

Portfolios: If you haven’t yet begun this process, please begin to collect artifacts to include in your portfolio. (See, Student Teaching Handbook). Your seminar instructor will give you more specific details.

Journals: Beginning ------------------------------through-----------------------------, please submit to me your journal entry in the provided template by Sunday of each week. The journal is considered on ongoing, off-the-record dialogue where I will frequently ask for your insights, clarification, and reactions. You are expected to provide a thorough response that is evident of deep reflection. Please be sure to proofread for grammar, syntax and mechanics.

Timing: By-------------------, I must submit an Interim Report to the Office of Field Experience, so four observations must be completed by then. The final Student Teaching Report is due by ---------------------.

Attendance Policy:  (For Clinical Practice II teacher candidates) “Student teachers are expected to regard their assignment as a full semester, full-time responsibility during which they are required to work all hours of each school day for the entire experience.” Please note that you should plan to arrive at least 15-30 minutes prior to your school’s required sign-in time to ensure you are prepared for the day. In addition, you are expected to attend any after school meetings and seminars as well. “The student teacher is allowed three documented unavoidable absences.” (See Handbook)

Communication: Please check your email on a daily basis. If I reach out to you via text, phone, or email, please respond as soon as possible. Also, please feel free to contact me at any time to discuss any problems, questions, or concerns you may be experiencing. I am here to help you!

 IMPORTANT!

By law, you are NEVER to be left alone with students at anytime, not even to cover a bathroom break. There are absolutely NO exceptions!
