Employee Email Migration to Office 365

Information Technology has initiated a project to migrate all WPUNJ employee email accounts from on-campus email servers to Microsoft cloud-based servers.

Office 365 Outlook

This migration will allow for improved integration of employee emails with the university's Office 365 for Education system. All email account contents and settings will be preserved in the migration.

Highlighted features:

  • Increased mailbox storage
  • Enhanced virus, spam, and malware protection
  • A new web access interface with an improved user experience
  • Online document viewing, editing, and simultaneous editing
  • Collaboration tools

The migration will take place over several months as university departments are migrated in groups. Prior to migration, Information Technology will be in contact with employees to provide information on your migration timeframe as well as what to expect and any actions you may need to take prior to and after migration.

An ITwiki article for common post-migration issues is available at https://itwiki.wpunj.edu/index.php/Exchange_365_Email_Migration.

Some key highlights from the article:

Microsoft Outlook
Your office computer’s Microsoft Outlook should automatically pick up the new settings. At the end of the migration, a dialog box will appear in Outlook (if it’s currently running) requiring the computer to be restarted. Outlook for Mac users may need to confirm that Outlook settings are configured to use the full email address (username@wpunj.edu) for the Username field. Please note: as your email account will now be hosted on Microsoft cloud-based servers, actions performed in the Outlook application will be slower than when your account was hosted on-campus. You may want to consider switching to Outlook Web Access.

Outlook Web Access (OWA)
The Outlook Web Access site (www.wpunj.edu/email or the email icon in WPconnect) will automatically redirect migrated accounts to the Microsoft Exchange Online Outlook Web Access site. After first logging in to www.wpunj.edu/email, another screen will prompt you to login through the WPU site before taking you to your mailbox.

You must login with your FULL email address, not just your username. Please note: if logging into OWA results in a ‘Account does not exist’ message, you will need to clear your web browser cache (see instructions in the Wiki article linked above). You may also login using a different browser.

Mobile Devices

Some mobile devices (phones, iPads, etc.) may need to be reconfigured to properly connect to your account. If the device was originally set up using the FULL email address as the Username, it will most likely automatically pick up the new settings. If not, it may need to be manually reconfigured to update/re-add the account.

Information Technology staff will be checking in on departments on the morning after their migrations. If you encounter any issues with your email after the migration, please contact the Helpdesk at 973.720.4357 or  www.wpunj.edu/helpdesk for assistance.

Thanks for your patience as we complete this migration.
