William Paterson University has been selected for the second consecutive year to receive a grant from the Mexican government, via the Consulate of Mexico, which is intended to improve the educational attainment of students from Mexico and students of Mexican origin.
The Mexican government’s IME Becas grant program, designed with the support of Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Institute for Mexicans Abroad, funds higher education or adult education for Mexican students abroad. Through the program, the University matches the Consulate’s award, thereby doubling the amount of scholarship money available. This year’s grant is $13,000.
“We are delighted to partner once again with William Paterson University through the Mexican government’s IME Becas program,” said Mariana Diaz, Head Consul of the Consulate of Mexico in New Brunswick. “With this collaboration, we can continue to support the academic development of Mexicans and Mexican Americans in New Jersey. I appreciate the University’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the educational opportunities of its students, thus contributing to the creation of a bright and prosperous future for all.”
William Paterson University has been designated by the U.S. Department of Education as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) since 2014. WP holds membership in organizations that include the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration, underscoring its advocacy for Hispanic students and immigrants.
“As a proud Hispanic-Serving Institution, William Paterson University remains committed to fostering cross-cultural engagement throughout our community,” says George F. Kacenga, Vice President for Enrollment Management. “The IME Becas program furthers our efforts to support students with or studying Mexican, Latinx, or Hispanic nationality who are pursuing their educational goals. This partnership allows us to provide meaningful resources to both current and future students, reflecting our mission of access, empowerment, and community engagement.”
The award will provide financial assistance in 2025 to students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate study programs.
