The David & Lorraine Cheng Library was among 56 academic libraries in the country, and the only one in New Jersey, to receive the 2024 Library Excellence in Access and Diversity (LEAD) Award from Insight Into Diversity magazine, the largest and oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education.

The award honors academic libraries whose programs and initiatives encourage and support diversity, equity, and inclusion across campus. “We know that many academic libraries are not always recognized for their dedication to diversity, inclusion, and access” observed owner and publisher of Insight Into Diversity magazine Lenore Pearlstein in announcing the award, concluding: “We are proud to honor these college and university libraries as role models for other institutions of higher education.” Dr. Edward Owusu-Ansah, Dean of the Cheng Library noted: “In an increasingly globalized world, it is imperative that institutions of higher learning and the libraries that serve them be more sensitive to the need for diversity and inclusivity not just as a matter of good strategy, but because it is also the right and fair thing to do.”

Cheng Library was selected for the award based on resources, services, and programs that support and advance diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives like the Real Men Read program that encourages and fosters a love for reading in minority student populations and Pod-Talks that promote resources and discourse on DEI topics.
