Terhune Foundation donates funds to purchase bilingual picture books for the David and Lorraine Cheng Library

The David and Lorraine Cheng Library received a $900 grant to purchase a small collection of VOX™ bilingual English-Spanish picture books appropriate for Pre-K-6 students. These books allow students to listen to each story being read to them in English and Spanish and there is even a place on the side of each book for students to plug in their head-phones.

Demographics of Passaic County and Passaic County schools indicate the need for teachers in the region to have more access to bilingual (English-Spanish) books and books written entirely in Spanish to support the population of students these schools serve.
In fact, 68.8% of K-12 students are Hispanic in Passaic County’s Paterson Public Schools district. This percentage is higher than even the New York City public schools, the largest public school district in the United States, where 41.1% of students are His-panic. Many pre-service Pre-K-6 teacher candidates at William Paterson University complete their student teaching in schools within Passaic County. They will benefit in the future from having access to these new bilingual read-aloud picture book re-sources thanks to the generous funds provided by the Albert Payson Terhune Foundation.

These VOX™ bilingual English-Spanish picture books have been added to the Curriculum Materials Center’s collection and are now available to members of our William Paterson University community.
