WP Jazz Orchestra and Student Ensembles to Perform at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola in New York City on May 1


The William Paterson University Jazz Orchestra will perform at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola/Jazz at Lincoln Center at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1.

The group is under the direction of David Demsey, WP music professor and coordinator of jazz studies, and will perform the music of Thad Jones and James Williams along with two student jazz arrangements. 

Two of the jazz studies program’s 24 small ensembles will perform the music of Cedar Walton at the 9.30 p.m. set. The groups are directed by jazz studies program director and internationally known jazz pianist Bill Charlap and longtime faculty member and renowned jazz bassist Steve LaSpina. Charlap and Demsey will also perform with the orchestra.

Additionally, WP master’s degree student Walter Gorra will be recognized as the winner of the prestigious DownBeat magazine winner of the Student Jazz Award for original composition for small ensemble.
