William Paterson University will hold a grand opening ceremony for its newly expanded and renovated 232,000-square-foot Science Complex on Thursday, March 1, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. on the institution’s campus in Wayne. The complex, featuring smart classrooms and sophisticated research laboratories designed to encourage an interactive learning environment, places the University at the forefront of science education in New Jersey.
Science Hall West contains leading edge modular research laboratories to support undergraduate studies and research and teaching labs for upper-level courses in areas such as biology, biotechnology, molecular research, physics, tissue culture, physical, analytical and organic chemistry, physiology, environmental science and ecology, and instrumentation. Research and laboratory spaces are configured to allow for collaboration between faculty and students.
Science Hall East features new computer labs, teaching labs for introductory courses, research labs, a psychology clinical training suite, a microscopy suite, an animal research facility, a new greenhouse, the Science Enrichment Center, and a mathematics learning center.
The entire complex contains smart classrooms with digital network and audiovisual capabilities and wireless technology. The complex also features four lecture halls, including a 75-seat space for upper-level classes designed in a nontraditional horseshoe shape.
The day’s events will include a symposium by Dr. John DeLuca ’79, Vice President for Research, Kessler Foundation Research Center and Professor, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Neurology and Neuroscience, UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, at 12:30 p.m. titled “Neuroimaging, Brain and Behavior: New Opportunities for the Future.”
DeLuca will discuss new techniques to image the brain that provide new opportunities to understand the relationship between brain functioning and behavior.
The ceremony will take place at the Science Complex entrance, near the John Victor Machuga Student Center on campus. It will include remarks by Kathleen Waldron, president of William Paterson University; Vincent Mazzola, chair of the University’s Board of Trustees; Sandra DeYoung, dean of the College of Science and Health; Martin Hahn, former professor of biology; and Lance Risley, chair and professor of biology. Tours of the facility will immediately follow the program. Parking for the event is available in Lot 5 on campus.
