University’s WPSC 88.7 FM Airs National Day of Broadcasts on “College Radio Day,” Tuesday, October 11, to Celebrate the Importance of College Radio

Robert Quicke, general manager of William Paterson University’s WPSC 88.7 FM, conceived and organized College Radio Day, designating October 11 as the annual day to celebrate of the importance of college radio. William Paterson’s radio station, WPSC 88.7, will feature live music, news, and “shout outs” from hundreds of college radio stations across the nation.

Quicke, an assistant professor of communication at William Paterson, co-founded the event with Peter Kreten, general manager, WXAV FM of Saint Xavier University in Chicago.

Quicke came up with the idea for College Radio Day to counter the growing trend of colleges and universities selling their radio station’s licenses, often valued in the millions. The aim of College Radio Day is to convince people to tune in to their local area college radio stations, support this unique programming, and remind college administrators just how important their college radio stations are.

Nearly 300 college and high school radio stations in the United States and Canada have signed up for College Radio Day. Participating stations will offer a showcase of their best programming on that day, and bring in special guests for musical performances and special interviews. Stations also agree to air a 15-minute keynote feature, College Radio in 2011: Its Past, Present, and Future.

In addition to live music and special programming, WPSC 88.7 FM will be airing scheduled telephone interviews with participating stations in 43 states across the nation on College Radio Day.

“Here at William Paterson University, we’re the national headquarters for College Radio Day. We’re trying to raise awareness of college radio, and to remind college administrators that college radio is valuable,” says Quicke.
