Alumna Margaret Landi ‘74, Chief Of Animal Welfare at Glaxosmithkline, to Speak to Stem Majors at William Paterson University on March 12

Event is presented by university’s WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) Program and Women’s Center as part of Women’s History Month celebration

Dr. Margaret Landi '74

Dr. Margaret Landi, chief of animal welfare, ethics, and strategy for GlaxoSmithKline and a 1974 graduate of William Paterson University, will return to her alma mater to speak to STEM majors on Thursday, March 12, 2015. Her address, titled “One Woman’s Journey in Science and Veterinary Medicine,” will be from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. in Science West 2064 on campus.  The program is part of William Paterson’s celebration of March as Women’s History Month.  Admission is free and open to the public.

In her role at GlaxoSmithKline, one of the world’s largest global healthcare companies, Landi is charged with ensuring the care, welfare, and ethical treatment of a wide variety of animals used in the research and development of the company’s numerous pharmaceuticals, consumer healthcare products, and vaccines. A diplomat in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) and the past president of ACLAM, she has served on the Council of the Institute of Laboratory Animal Research, part of the National Academy of Science and on review committees of the National Institutes of Health. Currently, Landi is a member of the board of trustees of the Scientists Center for Animal Welfare and the board of directors for Americans for Medical Progress and Chimp Haven, the only federally funded sanctuary for chimpanzees in the U.S.

Landi earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from William Paterson, her veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine and a master’s in comparative medicine from The Hershey Medical School of Penn State University. Landi is currently pursuing a master’s degree in bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania.  

The program is presented by William Paterson University’s Women’s Center and the University’s WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) Program in the College of Science and Health, which offers students individualized mentoring, networking with women professionals in the sciences, special lectures and talks, a shadowing opportunity, and visits to a range of corporate and educational locations.
