Construction Begins on Parking Garage

The garage and lot will provide 1,030 new parking spaces for students, faculty, staff, and visitors to the campus.

Work is underway on the University’s eagerly anticipated parking garage, which will be located on the east side of the campus behind Science Hall East.

The garage and an adjacent surface lot will provide 1,030 new parking spaces for students, faculty, staff, and visitors to the campus.  “We expect that the garage will relieve a great deal of the congestion experienced everyday, particularly by commuter students in Lots 4 and 5,” says Stephen Bolyai, vice president for administration and finance, adding that the facility will expand the number of available spaces on campus by more than 20 percent.

The five-level structure will be built into the hillside behind Lots 1 and 2 and adjacent to Science Hall East.  The entrance to the garage will be accessible from the access road near the tennis courts.  Two pedestrian bridges will allow direct access from the upper levels of the garage to new plazas at either end of Science Hall East.  New staircases and walkways will also be built between Lots 1 and 2 and on the roadway to the Machuga Student Center.

Preparation for the project began last fall.  The garage’s location required the rerouting of utility lines located under the site, as well as the demolition or repurposing of physical plant operations buildings and equipment. The entire project is estimated to take about 16 months, with completion slated for late spring or early summer 2014.
