Cheng Library Subscribes to Two Major Music Collections

Naxos Music Libary and Music Library Jazz provide two large collections of streaming music and additional materials.

The Cheng Library is pleased to announce that two new music databases have been added to our collection of electronic resources: the Naxos Music Library and the Naxos Music Library Jazz.

These new subscription services provide music online through streaming audio technology and are accessible to the University community. Together, they represent the most comprehensive collections of classical and jazz music now available online.

The Naxos Music Library is a large online collection of primarily classical music. It offers streaming audio access to more than 100,000 albums and features more than 1.4 million tracks covering both the standard and rare repertoire.

The collection offers the complete Naxos and Marco Polo catalogues in addition to the catalogues (or selected recordings) of famous labels such as ARC, Harmonia Mundi, Nonesuch, RCA Records, Sony Classical, Vanguard Classics and Warner Classics.  Coverage includes classical, jazz, and classic rock music as well as opera.  The  collection is supplemented with more than 800 recordings every month.

In addition to recorded music, the Naxos collections include liner notes, cover artwork, instrumentation details and publisher information for the albums.  Libretti and synopses of more than 700 operas and biographies of composers and musicians are also included.

The database provides several means of searching: by composer, genre, label and keyword.  In addition, an advanced search page allows users to combine several search criteria. Users also have the option of creating personalized playlists or can use the Naxos Music Library playlists.

Naxos Music Library Jazz is one of the most comprehensive collections of jazz music available online. The collection includes renowned jazz labels and exceptional performances.  More than 12,000 jazz artists are represented in the library which also includes more than 100,000 tracks of jazz from over 9,000 albums.

The collection includes the complete catalogues of Blue Note Records, the twenty-two labels of Fantasy Jazz and more than 200 additional labels. The Blue Note collection includes albums featuring the legendary artist John Coltrane and iconic artists such as Herbie Hancock, Dexter Gordon, Lee Morgan, and many others. In addition, the collection is continually updated with new jazz releases.

Both Naxos Music Library and Naxos Music Library Jazz are excellent tools for music education. Faculty can select soundtracks from these extensive collections for use in smart classrooms and in online sessions. Teachers may also plan course work based on the supporting materials and create customized playlists.

The collections are accessible from any computer, anytime, anywhere through the standard Internet connection of most computers and tablets. The iPhone/iPod and Android mobile apps enable listeners to access the recordings using their smartphones.

Naxos has received outstanding reviews in music and media publications. Its successful combination of high-quality digital content together with advanced Internet technology makes it one of the most impressive products for music listening and learning.  Both collections are owned by Naxos Digital Services Ltd., part of the Hong Kong-based Naxos Group of Companies.
