On April 1, 2015, the annual Cheng Library Authors’ Reception was held in the University Commons.  Faculty members, staff and administrators turned out to acknowledge the wealth of publications recently created by their colleagues.  Publications from all five colleges and various departments were displayed.  Guests enjoyed refreshments while viewing the wide variety of academic papers, books and other media exhibited.

Pamela Theus, Assistant Directorof the Cheng Library welcomed those assembled.  President Waldron spoke to the crowd, recognizing the abundance and variety of the authors’ endeavors.   Interim Library Dean Anne Ciliberti also spoke briefly, as did Associate Provost, Dr. Stephen Hahn. Martin Williams, Director of Sponsored Programs, was on hand to recognize faculty and staff who had successfully applied for grants via his office.

This year’s display included several books.  Dr. Ronald Verdicchio collaborated with a group of University students to write a book about the history of Prospect Park, NJ published by Arcadia.  Dr. Nicole Davi of Environmental Science co-authored a book on tree growth and climate change.

Dr. Keumsil Kim Yoon and Dr. Bruce Williams of Languages and Cultures co-authored a book about Korean culture and cinema.  The second edition of Dr. Nadine Aktan’s book for nurse practitioners and the second edition of Dr. Julie Rosenthal and Dr. Elizabeth Brown’s book on teaching literacy were exhibited as was the second edition of Dr. Thomas Heinzen’s textbook, Essentials of Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences.  Three other textbooks were displayed: Health & Physical Assessment in Nursing by Dr. D’Amico and Dr. Barbarito, Tablets in K-12 Education by Dr. Heejung An, and Strangers to these Shores by Dr. Vincent Parillo. Dr. Joanne Cho of the History department co-edited two books and also contributed chapters to these books.

The College of Arts and Communication was also well represented. Dr. Alejandro Anreus wrote two books on the artist, Luis Cruz Azaceta.  One book was a catalog to accompany an exhibit at Aljira, a contemporary art center in Newark, NJ, and the second book was published by the Chicano Studies Research Center.  Dr. Robin Schwartz’s book of photography, Amelia & the Animals, recently published by Aperture, was also displayed.

Among the publications were several creative items including short stories, fiction and science fiction.  This year, a few books of poetry were also part of the bibliography. Timothy Liu, Bill Wolak and Alejandro Anreus all authored poetry compilations. Dr. Karen Demsey contributed a compact disk of music titled Streaming Dreams by the Up Town Flutes.  Dr. Demsey was both performer and director for the recording.

These faculty are just a few of the many authors whose myriad publications were displayed at the reception.

The library staff has hosted this event for more than 25 years.  Each year an accompanying booklet lists citations for all of the publications.  The booklet and the corresponding displays are a means of acknowledging the scholarship and academic vitality of the University’s faculty and staff.

This year’s booklet contained 201 entries, and the types of publications spanned many varieties: books, textbooks, articles, book chapters, fiction, novels, translations, interviews, photography, poems and one compact disk of recorded music.

The Cheng Library invites the University faculty and staff to begin thinking about next year’s Authors’ Reception and to contact Pamela Theus, Assistant Director of the Cheng Library, for more information: by email at theusp@wpunj.edu and by phone at 973-720-2160.
