Welcome and Get Acquainted

  • Identify the key elements of an online course
  • Develop a fundamental understanding of the nature of online learning

Day 2

Understanding the Online Learning Environment

  • Describe the differences between face-to-face and online learning environments
  • Describe the characteristics of an effective online learning environment
  • Identify those elements that will make a difference in your online course

Day 3

Preparing Students for Online Learning

  • Explore issues to consider in developing an effective syllabus for an online course.
  • Begin work on developing your own online syllabus

Day 4

Managing the Online Classroom Effectively

  • Utilize the guidelines for effective management of an online environment
  • List the tips for improving readability of messages
  • Explain the roles of tone in the online learning environment
  • Describe the consequences of inappropriate tone
  • Apply appropriate tone in online classroom exchanges to avoid miscommunication
  • Summarize the methods of setting effective tone when grading papers
  • Identify the rules of netiquette (network etiquette) that can be applied to the online learning environment
  • Discuss the online student's roles and responsibilities in the online environment

Synchronous Learning Activities

  • Learn how to interact with your students in real-time

Revealing the Secrets of Facilitation

  • Identify the characteristics of a successful online instructor
  • Identify and apply several of the practical tips and techniques in facilitating online learning
  • Apply the techniques to create a learner-centered environment
  • Enact the role of creating a supportive learning environment as an instructor

Day 7

Utilizing Groups

  • Describe the purpose(s) of learning in groups
  • Identify the four stages of group activities and describe how they affect class performance
  • Describe student and faculty roles and responsibilities in groups
  • Identify strategies that prepare groups for success
  • Describe why or why not you will use groups in your online course

Day 8

Writing Effective Feedback

  • Describe the characteristics of effective feedback
  • Compare and contrast different types of feedback
  • Describe when, where, how and how often you will give feedback to your online students for a particular concept or module in your online course

Day 9

Using and Reusing Multimedia

  • Identify ways in which multimedia can be used to enhance the learning environment
  • Learn how to create multimedia content, as well as how to find and make fair use of multimedia content available online

Day 10

Best Practice and New Opportunities

  • Learn to take advantage of new opportunities.
  • Pick up and share best practices for teaching online
