American Social History Project

"The American Social History Project/Center for Media and Learning is dedicated to renewing interest in history by challenging traditional ways that people learn about the past. Founded in 1981 and based at the City University of New York Graduate Center, ASHP/CML produces print, visual, and multimedia materials that explore the richly diverse social and cultural history of the United States. We also lead professional development seminars that help teachers to use the latest scholarship, technology, and active learning methods in their classrooms."

Educators for Social Responsibility

"Educators for Social Responsibility (ESR) works directly with educators to implement systemic practices that create safe, caring, and equitable schools so that all young people succeed in school and life, and help shape a safe, democratic and just world." Founded in 1982. Its Online Teacher Center has a large database of teacher resources.

Facing History and Ourselves

"Facing History and Ourselves delivers classroom strategies, resources and lessons that inspire young people to take responsibility for their world.... A documentary on the history of nonviolent struggle. Also a companion book. GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network

GLSEN "is the leading national education organization focused on ensuring safe schools for all students. Established in 1990, GLSEN envisions a world in which every child learns to respect and accept all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. GLSEN seeks to develop school climates where difference is valued for the positive contribution it makes to creating a more vibrant and diverse community. Includes many resources for teachers.

Morningside Center for Teaching Social Responsibility, Teachable Moment

National Women's History Project

"The National Women's History Project, founded in 1980, is an educational nonprofit organization. Our mission is to recognize and celebrate the diverse and historic accomplishments of women by providing information and educational materials and programs." Many resources available in their Resource Center.

Rethinking Schools

A magazine, book publisher, and resource center for social justice education. Among the many simulations is Susan Hersh and Bob Peterson's Poverty and World Wealth ("The purpose of this activity is to graphically demonstrate the vast differences in wealth between different areas of the world. It combines math, geography, writing, and social studies.") From the book edited by Bill Bigelow and Bob Peterson, Rethinking Globalization: Teaching for Justice in an Unjust World (Rethinking Schools: 2002).

Teaching A People's History

An extensive collection of teaching resources developed by "Rethinking Schools" and "Teaching for Change" to be used with Howard Zinn's People's History of the United States.

Teaching Economics as If People Mattered

Free, high-school economics lesson plans. "Each one includes everything you need to get started and all are mapped into NCEE standards." Includes Ten Chairs (based on Polly Kellogg, "Ten Chairs of Inequality," Rethinking Schools, Spring 1998) and Born on Third Base, two classroom simulations on the distribution of wealth.

United Nations, Cyberschoolbus
