Grammy Award-winning jazz and blues vocalist Catherine Russell returns to William Paterson University in Wayne on Saturday, February 13 at 8 p.m. to kick off the spring 2016 Jazz Room series with a special pre-Valentine’s Day concert in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus.

The performance is also part of the University’s WP Presents! Onstage Café.  Tickets are $60 for onstage seating with a dinner and dessert buffet and open beer and wine bar.  Concert tickets only are $30.  Dinner ticketholders should arrive by 6:30 p.m.

A native New Yorker, Russell has performed on four continents and at countless jazz festivals. In 2012, she won a Grammy Award for her appearance on the soundtrack for HBO’s hit TV series Boardwalk Empire. She has released five critically acclaimed CDs, including 2014’s Bring It Back.

Russell was born into jazz royalty—her father, Luis Russell, was Louis Armstrong’s musical director, and her mother, Carline Ray, was a well-known bassist and vocalist. Russell has toured the world and recorded and performed with Steely Dan, David Bowie, Paul Simon, Cyndi Lauper, Jackson Browne, Michael Feinstein, Levon Helm and Rosanne Cash. She is considered one of the greatest interpreters of the American songbook.

Launched in 1978, William Paterson University’s Jazz Room Series is one of the largest and most prestigious college-sponsored jazz events in the country. Performers include renowned professionals who encompass the complete spectrum of jazz, as well as William Paterson’s own student ensembles. The series has won numerous grants from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for its innovative programming.
