William Paterson University Presents "Explorations 2017": Research, Scholarship, and Creative Expression Across All Academic Disciplines with Series of Events in April

—Highlights include 11th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental and Health Sciences on Saturday, April 22

Explorations 2017: Research, Scholarship and Creative Expression, a series of events showcasing research across all five colleges at William Paterson University in Wayne, will be held from April 4 through April 28, 2017. Events include lectures, presentations of faculty and student research and awards, Honors Week student presentations, a faculty authors celebration and poster sessions.

“We are very proud of the wide range of research, scholarly and creative work conducted on an ongoing basis by our faculty and students in all of our academic disciplines,” says Warren Sandmann, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. “Exploration 2017 provides an opportunity for us to celebrate their many accomplishments with several important events.”

The series begins with Honors Week Student Research Presentations on April 4 through 6, in University Commons 171 A/B, showcasing the work of students completing one of the University’s Honors College tracks and recognizing the faculty and staff who contribute to their success. On April 4, presentations from 7 to 9 p.m. will be held in the Cheng Library Auditorium. Also from April 4 through 6, there will be presentations by faculty that are sponsored by all five colleges and other programs, including the Paterson Metropolitan Regional Research Center held in University Commons, and interdisciplinary poster sessions on research by undergraduate and master’s degree students as well as faculty on April 4 and 6.

Other highlights during the month include the Women in Science and Engineering Program Lecture Series. Anita Bestelmeyer, director, Corporate Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE), Office of Science, Medicine and Technology, Becton, Dickinson and Company will present a lecture on Tuesday, April 4 at 12:30 p.m. in Science West 301. Carolee T. Bull, professor and department head, Department of Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology, at Penn State University, will present a lecture on Friday, April 28, location to be announced.

On Thursday, April 6, there will be a UPS Computer Information Technology Lecture Series, sponsored by the Department of Computer Science and funded by the UPS Foundation, will feature a lecture by Dr. Steven M. Bellovin, the Percy K. and Vidal L. Hudson Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University on “Computers, Science and the Law.” The lecture will be on Thursday, April 6 in UC211; dinner will be provided.

On Thursday, April 13, the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing, Iota Alpha Chapter will present the Annual Nursing Research Conference from 5 to 8 p.m. in University Ballroom A. The theme is “Nurses’ Influence through Evidence Based Research.” Barbara Crump, PhD, will be the keynote speaker on the topic, “Exploring Nurses’ Perceptions of Dignity at the End of Life.” Leo-Felix M. Jurado, associate professor, nursing, and a 2016 American Academy of Nursing Fellow, will speak on “Facilitators and Barriers in Attracting and Retaining Men in the Nursing Workforce,” followed by the nursing students’ poster session.

On Tuesday, April 18, there will be reception recognizing faculty and other University staff who published books, articles, recordings or other materials as well as received grants or other support for their research or service activities. The reception, sponsored by the David and Lorraine Cheng Library and the Office of Sponsored Programs Recognition of Recent Award Recipients, will be from 3:30 to 5 p.m., University Commons Ballroom C.

On Friday, April 21, the New Jersey Social Media Summit 2017 will be held in University Commons Ballroom C. Sponsored by the MA in Professional Communication Program, the annual event brings together students, scholars, and business professionals interested in social media for a day of panel discussions, breakout workshops and networking opportunities.

The series culminates on Saturday, April 22, with the 11th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental and Health Sciences. More than 100 undergraduate science students and faculty from nearly 30 colleges throughout New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania will present their research during this annual symposium. The range of subject matter has expanded and now includes behavioral, ecological, and health topics as well as the original areas of biology and chemistry.
