William Paterson University to Host Guitarfest 2012 on April 28

The William Paterson University Music Department will host the 17th annual guitar festival, Guitarfest 2012, on April 28 in Hobart Manor on the University campus in Wayne. The day’s events include a concert and master class presented by guitarist Eric Henderson. The program is open to the public. Admission is $20 for one or more events; for students who wish to participate in the master class, the cost is $60.

Festivities begin at 11 a.m. with a performance by William Paterson University students studying in the guitar program. At 1:30 p.m., guitarist Paul Meyers will present a nylon string jazz guitar concert. Eric Henderson will conduct a master class from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and Henderson will present a concert that will include original compositions, works by Tárrega, Torroba and Granados, as well as arrangements of music by the Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix at 7:30 p.m.

California-based guitarist and composer Eric Henderson studied with many of the great classical guitarist, notably Andres Segovia in Spain. He has performed extensively in Europe and throughout the U.S. Henderson has completed seven albums, including “Castillian Nights,” “Faces,” “Cathedral Heights,” “All My Soul,” “Encore,” “Guitarra” and “Flamenco Surf.”

Paul Meyers is a guitarist who combines the original technique of classical guitar with a deep understanding of the jazz tradition that includes a strong influence of Brazilian and Latin music. Meyers has recorded with many jazz musicians and has his own critically acclaimed CDs. His compositions and arrangements are popular among performers such as vibraphonist Gary Burton, Brasil & Company and Euforia.
