William Paterson University Hosts Sixth Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium on Saturday, April 14

--Event held in conjunction with 66th Annual Eastern Colleges Science Conference

More than one hundred undergraduate students and faculty from colleges throughout New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut will present their research during the 6th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium at William Paterson University in Wayne on Saturday, April 14 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

The symposium, sponsored by the University’s College of Science and Health, includes morning and afternoon poster sessions from 9:30 to 11:20 a.m. and 2:45 to 4:35 p.m. in the Science Complex Lobby. Posters will display student research in seven categories: biochemistry, physiology, cell and molecular biology, genetics, ecology and evolution, nanochemistry, and general and material chemistry. The entries will be judged and awards will be presented to first and second place winners in a ceremony at 5 p.m. in Science East, Room 2064. Participants are from numerous institutions, including William Paterson University, Rutgers University, Seton Hall University, Stevens Institute of Technology, and Marymount Manhattan College.

Kathryn Uhrich, professor and dean, mathematical and physical science, Rutgers University, will present the plenary address, “PolyAspirin: From Invention to Innovation,” from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in Science East, Room 2064.

“One of the strategic directions of the College of Science and Health at William Paterson University is to increase the number of undergraduate students doing research with faculty,” says Jaishri Menon, professor of biology at William Paterson and coordinator of the symposium. “This event provides an important forum for our students, as well as students from other institutions, to present their research while interacting with other student researchers as they celebrate their educational accomplishments.”

The symposium is held this year in conjunction with the 66th Annual Eastern Colleges Science Conference, a forum for undergraduates to present their empirical and discovery-based research in the natural sciences and engineering, using the general format of a professional meeting.
